Blog Sweet Blog

Hi I'm Jose Quinones and I've been excited to start this foundation portfolio blog for a while mostly because I have so many ideas floating around in my head that I've needed somewhere to jot them down.  There is one thing I know for sure, which is that I want to model my opening after the overall themes of some of my favorite movies like Ferris Bueller's Day Off and Weekend at Bernie's but with a more modern twist.

The aspect of these two movies that inspires me personally is the focus on the relationship between the two main characters which is established as a natural bond without any need for exposition or background to it.  This is what first gave me an idea for having a movie centered around two friends simply wanting to have a good time.  This led to me conducting research into the teen film genre.  As Catherine Driscoll explains in her book Teen Film: A Critical Introduction, "Teen film is usually discussed as a representation of the changing American teenager, highlighting the institutions of high school and the nuclear family, and experiments in sexual development and identity formation." Which is why the obvious decision for me to come to was to center the opening around the relationship between two high school students who are already established best friends.

My initial idea was centered around the dynamic relationship between Ferris and Cameron in Ferris Bueller's Day Off, with one character being adventurous and confident and the other being more reserved and cautious.  This led to the idea of the more adventurous of the friends asking the reserved one to go on an adventure with him in the middle of the night.  While I began coming up with this idea I realized that I would need a title, that title being City Day. Essentially centered around the idea that these two teenagers have one designated day every year to drive into Miami and enjoy themselves.  This idea is something that I don't want to explicitly describe in the opening itself but instead establish the close bond between the two characters by only referencing City Day and having the characters already know what is implied.

I already have actors in mind including my friend Alberto and his sister Mila, once I get them on board (which I will), I will keep you guys updated.  Stay tuned for more information on movies of this type.
